How to Protect Your Silver Jewelry from Scratches and Tarnish
Want your silver jewelry to stay shiny and scratch-free for longer? Just follow these simple care tips.
First, make your jewelry the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Apply perfume, lotion, hairspray, and cosmetics before wearing it, and allow them to dry completely.
Remove your jewelry before showering, swimming, exercising, sleeping, cleaning, or doing household chores. Water, perspiration, chlorine, and household chemicals can speed up tarnishing and affect the finish.
To prevent scratches, avoid allowing your jewelry to rub against hard surfaces or other pieces. Store each item separately in a soft pouch or individual compartment—especially when traveling. You can also place an anti-tarnish strip or a small silica-gel packet inside your jewelry box to help reduce moisture and tarnishing.
After each wear, gently wipe your jewelry with a clean, soft, dry cloth to remove oils and perspiration.
If you notice light tarnish, use a specially treated silver-polishing cloth and rub the surface gently until the shine returns. Don’t wash the polishing cloth, because water can remove its active cleaning treatment.

How to Make Tarnished Silver Jewelry Shine Again
Has your silver jewelry started to look dark or dull? Don’t worry—tarnish is a normal surface reaction, and in many cases, you can remove it at home.
Before cleaning, check whether your jewelry is solid sterling silver, plated, or set with gemstones. Some cleaning methods are suitable only for solid, unplated silver.
For light tarnish, the easiest option is a chemically treated silver-polishing cloth. Gently rub the silver using straight, back-and-forth motions until the shine begins to return. The cloth may turn black as it lifts away the tarnish—that’s completely normal. Don’t wash the cloth, because washing will remove its polishing treatment.
A regular microfiber cloth can remove fingerprints, skin oils, and surface dirt, but it may not remove established tarnish. For basic cleaning, add a few drops of mild dish soap to warm water. Gently clean the jewelry with a soft cloth or soft-bristled toothbrush, rinse thoroughly, and dry it completely.
For heavier tarnish, you can use a commercial silver cleaner available at most major U.S. retailers. Choose one specifically labeled for sterling silver and follow the directions exactly. Never leave the jewelry in the solution longer than recommended, and never mix silver cleaner with other cleaning products.
For solid, unplated sterling silver without gemstones, you can also try a simple household method. Line a bowl with aluminum foil, add hot—but not boiling—water and baking soda, and place the jewelry in contact with the foil for a few minutes. Rinse it well and dry it immediately with a soft cloth.

Do not use the baking-soda method or silver dip on plated jewelry, pearls, opals, turquoise, glued stones, or intentionally oxidized details. Never clean silver with bleach, chlorine, toothpaste, or abrasive brushes.
Once your jewelry is clean and completely dry, store each piece separately in an airtight pouch with an anti-tarnish strip. With proper cleaning and storage, your silver jewelry can look bright and beautiful again.
